Buena Vista Township

Buena Vista Township is the largest municipality in Atlantic County by area, spanning roughly 42 square miles of farmland, forests, and small communities in the western part of the county. Incorporated in 1867, the township was named after the Battle of Buena Vista during the Mexican-American War — a common naming convention of that era. It is also the parent municipality from which the neighboring Borough of Buena separated in 1948, and the two share much of their history and identity even though they are now governed independently.

The township is made up of several distinct communities — most notably Landisville, Minotola, Richland, and Newtonville — each with its own character. Landisville and Minotola serve as the primary commercial hubs along the Route 40 (Harding Highway) corridor, while Richland sits at the crossroads of Route 40 and Route 54 and functions as the township's geographic and civic center. Newtonville lies to the northeast, closer to the Pine Barrens.
