About

About Egg Harbor Township

Egg Harbor Township's roots stretch back to 1693, when the area was first recorded as part of Gloucester County — then known as "New Weymouth." The township's name traces to Dutch explorer Cornelius Jacobsen Mey, who in 1614 observed the marshes along the Great Egg Harbor River filled with shorebird and waterfowl eggs, calling the area "Eieren Haven," or Egg Harbor. Incorporated as Egg-Harbour Township in 1798, the community played a quiet but real role in the Revolutionary War, with local privateers operating from its waterways and the nearby Battle of Chestnut Neck unfolding just across the region. For centuries, the area thrived on shipbuilding, fishing, and coastal trade before evolving into the suburban community it is today.

Spanning roughly 75 square miles — making it one of the largest municipalities in Atlantic County by land area — Egg Harbor Township sits at a sweet spot between the coast and the mainland. Atlantic City and its famous boardwalk are just about 12 miles east, while Philadelphia is roughly an hour north, and the Pinelands National Reserve borders the township to the west. That means residents get easy access to beach towns like Ocean City, Brigantine, and Longport without living right on top of the seasonal beach crowds. The township also shares its borders with Galloway, Somers Point, and Pleasantville, placing it in the heart of South Jersey's most connected communities.

Today, Egg Harbor Township is a well-established, family-oriented community with a 2020 Census population of 47,842 — the largest municipality in Atlantic County — and a strong sense of local pride. The township is home to the 220-acre Nature Reserve — a favorite for hiking, kayaking, and wildlife observation — as well as Storybook Land, a beloved family amusement park that has been delighting children since 1955. With nine municipal parks, the FAA William J. Hughes Technical Center, and proximity to Stockton University and Atlantic City International Airport, the township blends suburban calm with meaningful economic activity. For homebuyers, it offers a wide mix of single-family neighborhoods, newer developments, and established communities at a range of price points — a big part of why so many families, professionals, and relocating buyers choose to put down roots here.
